Wedding guest dresses for beach weddings

Traditional wedding ceremonies call for a fairly formal dress code. However, when the venue is a sandy seashore, the rules change a little bit. A beach wedding is much more casual and your guests’ comfort should be prioritized. As a wedding guest, one might feel a little lost on what to wear. Leaving your guests to wing it in the dressing sector might lead to variations in attire that might ruin the mood of the entire ceremony. Conversely, it’s very common to have brides controlling the dress code to match their wedding aesthetics and facilitate a great photo album.

Beach weddings present a number of challenges when it comes to finding the right attire. Logistically, heels don’t work in the sand and a long sweeping gown might feel out of place. Similarly, one might feel so out of place when they wear a printed sundress.

The first step to figuring out what to wear is to understand the dress code. Ideally, beach weddings are casual, so in most cases, wearing a fun print, shorter hemline or bright colors will work. If the wedding is a little formal, a nice jumpsuit, a slightly longer dress, or solid colors may work.

While black is the go-to color for most wedding guests, avoid it at the seaside. Instead, go for colors such as pastels, purple, turquoise, or coral. As for the fabrics, look for breathable and lightweight, especially if it’s a hot summer day. Linen and cotton are great options, and you’ll want to avoid fabrics like satin and velvet, which will look and feel too heavy.

Beach Wedding Dress Code 101

If the wedding invitation has a dress code, it’s best to adhere to it. For example, if the dress code is beach formal, then a long, elegant gown is appropriate.

Semi-formal wedding dress codes call for short or tea-length dresses since they don’t drag in the sand. These dresses are also great as they can transition to a reception venue held in a hotel or oceanfront.

Wondering what to wear for a casual wedding dress code? The best choice would be a nice maxi dress. Maxi dresses are flowy and comfortable especially around the bottom to easily sweep it across the sand and brush it clean during the reception.

It is important to wear shoes that can slip on and off easily. Sandals would be the most ideal shoes to wear during beach wedding ceremonies, as long as they are on the nicer side.

As for the men, unless the invitation explicitly states that you can wear shorts, don’t wear them. If the dress code states “beach formal” a traditional suit would be ideal. For a semi-formal ceremony, one can wear slacks and a button-down shirt. One can forgo the tie since it can feel restrictive and too much.

Lastly, long pants and a light color button-down shirt with short or three-quarter sleeves are appropriate casual beach wedding attire for male guests.

Below is a collection of beautiful beach wedding dresses for guests. We love all of these dresses because they are the ideal length, colors, and fabrics to keep you looking and feeling great as a beach wedding guest.
